Upcoming Connect to Kinder Dates

Scott School is hosting a series of 3 Connect to Kinder events in the upcoming months. Come learn about registration, dual language and the early transition program.
Childcare won’t be provided but we will have kid friendly activities and interpretation. We can’t wait to introduce you to our wonderful community here at Scott School!

First Connect to Kinder Meeting

The Scott PTA has formed a Kindergarten Committee to help welcome incoming parents of new kindergartners to our community. The first Connect to Kinder meeting of the 2018 school year will be held on Thursday, Jan. 25th at 6pm in the library. The Kindergarten Committee is planning on being at that meeting and serving as greeters and parent liaisons, and the PTA will have an information table with lost of stuff you need do know, as well as Scott swag for sale!

If you would like to help out as a set-up person, volunteer, or just as a greeter who can share your child’s experiences at Scott with new parents, please contact ScottScholPTA@gmail.com to connect with our Volunteer Coordinator. Thank you!

Did you know you can access the Scott School PTA Calendar by clicking the “Calendar” link above, or clicking here? How cool is that?

February Newsletter

Everyone should have seen a Newsletter in backpacks on Friday. If you haven’t, here is an electronic version. Volume 3 Number 3: Feb 2014

Please note that due to the VERY fluid situation between PPS and PAT (teacher’s union), the dates on the first page are largely incorrect. Please see the district website for more information. http://www.pps.k12.or.us/ We are also trying to keep things up to date on Facebook.

Corrections, as known at this time are below:

Wed, Feb 19th – There is School from 8am to 11:45am. Students will be released early in anticipation of the strike. This allows administration to “check-out” teachers. Note that YMCA will be available for already registered kids from 11:45-regular close. The status of SUN on Wed, Feb 19th is unknown at this time. SUN will not be available on the 19th if there is early release.

Thurs, Feb 20th – In case of a strike, no school. Kindergarten Round-up has been canceled. PTA meeting (6pm) has been kicked out of the building and the PTA is working on an alternative site. YMCA is available all day at Alameda for kids who are already registered with YMCA.

Friday, Feb 21st – In case of strike, no school. YMCA is available all day at Alameda for kids who are already registered with YMCA. The Community Priorities meeting is still on because it was always to be held off-site at Hacienda at 5pm.

Monday, Feb 24th – In case of strike, no school.

Tuesday, Feb 25th – In case of strike, PPS’s contingency plan states that K-8 should start to open with substitutes. Please watch http://www.pps.k12.or.us/ for information. Presumably YMCA and SUN will be available after school on site, but this has not yet been confirmed.

Friday, Feb 27th – African American Heritage night and the Kindergarten Round-up have both been canceled by PPS instruction.

February is the lottery season for next school year.

  • The High School transfer period opened January 27th and will close on February 21st at 5pm. 8th grade students will have visits from Councilors and other staff from many of the high schools. There are still some tours and High School events in early February. See http://www.pps.k12.or.us/rsc/5306.htm for dates.
  • The K-8 transfer period opens February 3rd and closes on March 7th at 5pm. Due to space and crowding issues, PPS has decided to not open any Kindergarten Spanish Immersion lottery spots at Scott to children outside the neighborhood. This will likely limit the Spanish Immersion Kindergarten to 2 classes next year plus one English only Kindergarten class. However, if we can find enough native English speakers from the neighborhood interested in the Immersion program, Scott will accommodate them.

Enrolling as many neighborhood students as possible is one way to keep our Spanish Immersion program going strong. 3 Spanish Immersion Kinder classes is much more desirable than the 2 that the district is promising. For example: Immersion classes have attrition over time, so it is helpful to have 3 sections to collapse into 2 if needed in the upper grades.

Make sure your neighbors are aware of the great things happening at Scott School by helping distribute flyers with an invitation to Kindergarten Round-Up. Meet on the covered basketball courts on Saturday, February 8th 10am for coffee and grab some flyers to distribute.

And when are these round-ups happening?

Please encourage your neighbors with children turning 5 by September 1st, 2014 to attend a session and learn about enrollment options (neighborhood and Spanish Immersion) at Scott School. Dates and times of the sessions are:

    • Jan 30 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm
    • Feb 5 3:00pm – 4:00pm
    • Feb 20 5:00pm – 6:00pm
    • Feb 27 4:30pm – 5:30pm
    • Mar 12 6:00pm – 7:00pm
    • Apr 17 5:00pm – 6:00pm
    • Apr 30 12:30pm – 1:30pm
    • May 15 5:00pm – 6:00pm
    • May 30 11:00am – 12:00pm

Also note that many of these dates are just before a school event. Tomorrow, it is right before Literacy Night. Look at the sidebar to the right to see what is going on.
