Lack of Spanish-Speaking Substitute Teachers

SpanImmersionThe director from the Department of Dual Languages will be coming to meet with parents at Scott School on Wednesday, October 21st @ 6:30 pm. She will be meeting with parents to address concerns about the present lack of qualified Spanish speaking substitute teachers to cover Maestra Perez’s first grade classroom during her maternity leave.

Parents also hope to vocalize concerns about the future staffing needs for Spanish Immersion district-wide, and ask that the Department of Dual Languages focus on current dual-immersion programs prior looking toward expansion. We are calling for strength in numbers at this meeting – Parents please come if you are available.

Scott Parents Needed: Kindergarten Round – Ups

Kindergarten Round Ups are happening at Scott!

It would be great if Scott parents could attend some of these as in years past. I know having our neighbor’s input really helped us make the decision to put our child in the immersion program. And it’s a great way to build community!

Here are the upcoming dates:
Thurs, Feb. 27, 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.
Wed, Mar. 12, 6 – 7 p.m.
Thu, Apr 17, 5 – 6 p.m.
Wed, Apr 30, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.
Thu, May 15, 5 – 6 p.m.
Fri, May 30, 11 – 12 p.m.

Leave a comment if you are able to attend any of these. Also, spread the word to the other parents!

February is the lottery season for next school year.

  • The High School transfer period opened January 27th and will close on February 21st at 5pm. 8th grade students will have visits from Councilors and other staff from many of the high schools. There are still some tours and High School events in early February. See for dates.
  • The K-8 transfer period opens February 3rd and closes on March 7th at 5pm. Due to space and crowding issues, PPS has decided to not open any Kindergarten Spanish Immersion lottery spots at Scott to children outside the neighborhood. This will likely limit the Spanish Immersion Kindergarten to 2 classes next year plus one English only Kindergarten class. However, if we can find enough native English speakers from the neighborhood interested in the Immersion program, Scott will accommodate them.

Enrolling as many neighborhood students as possible is one way to keep our Spanish Immersion program going strong. 3 Spanish Immersion Kinder classes is much more desirable than the 2 that the district is promising. For example: Immersion classes have attrition over time, so it is helpful to have 3 sections to collapse into 2 if needed in the upper grades.

Make sure your neighbors are aware of the great things happening at Scott School by helping distribute flyers with an invitation to Kindergarten Round-Up. Meet on the covered basketball courts on Saturday, February 8th 10am for coffee and grab some flyers to distribute.

And when are these round-ups happening?
